Esethu Gagasi
EsethuIsiphiwo is a South African artist based in Cape Town, originally from a small village in the Eastern Cape. Working in acrylic on canvas with mixed media beadwork, her practice is deeply rooted in the women who raised her black women whose presence, love, and quiet strength shaped everything she creates.
Her beadwork is inherited. Sitting beside her mother as a child, learning with her hands before she understood what she was learning, Esethu carried that memory into her art. It is what makes her work distinctively hers.
Her paintings center black women in moments of stillness, comfort, and connection always unbothered, always fully themselves. The comfort in her figures is intentional. It represents the rare freedom of being around people who celebrate you, who see you, who make space for you to be exactly who you are without apology.
Esethu began painting after moving to Cape Town to study computer engineering and data science. The shift from a village where the bigger world only existed on screens, to a city where everything she had imagined became real, became the foundation of her art and its message. She paints abundance, possibility, and belonging for every person who grew up where big dreams felt too far away.
Her work is a reminder. This world is yours too.
