Carved surfboard and painted with acrylics
234 x 54 x 15 cm
The board used in this piece is a huge old windsurfing board, made with a very thich plastic outer shell. The owner was getting rid of it because she’d left it in her car one very hot day and it warped badly.
At the time, I had a powder coating business and access to a huge oven which i used to then heat it up to approx 100C, with weights added to force it back into alignment.
The deck (top half) was cut out, with a small section left at the bottom bec of the thinness and also where most of the hardware (fins boxes are), which make any carving unviable.
The shear size required a design that would make use of it, so what better subject to fill the space. The side profile of the board also leant perfectly towards the porcupine quills.
