David van der Spuy
I was born in Cape Town and grew up in Cape Town, Bloemfontein and Pretoria.
I studied Geology and Geochemistry at the University of Cape Town and worked as a geologist and geochemist in my professional life.
My art education has been wholly informal, beginning with part-time classes as a teenager in Pretoria with the sculptor and Pretoria University lecturer, Mike Edwards, under whose guidance I was taught drawing, painting, print making, etching, and sculpture in clay and stone.
Later, having moved back to Cape Town, I attended drawing classes with Ryno Swart at the Ruth Prowse School of Art. In 2002 I met Linda Waterkeyn and joined her Bentwood Painting School, taking part-time classes in oil painting for four years.
Besides painting, I also make reduction fired pottery and one of my pots is included in the permanent exhibition at the Clay Museum in Durbanville.
