Leroy Sopio is an emerging South African artist based in Cape Town, whose creative journey is driven by curiosity, color, and a deep love for storytelling through paint.

Born and raised with an appreciation for the vibrancy of African life, Leroy approaches art not as a single style, but as an open exploration. He does not confine himself to one genre or subject. Instead, he paints what moves him – from wildlife and nature, to everyday life, portraiture, and abstract expressions. His work is an evolving visual diary of a young artist discovering his voice.

Leroy’s current body of work marks the beginning of that journey. Working primarily in acrylic on reclaimed wooden panels, he brings new life to discarded wood, transforming its rough texture into bold, graphic canvases. His first series focuses on iconic animal forms – lions, leopards, sharks, and orcas – rendered in striking silhouettes filled with warm sunsets, lush jungles, and oceanic blues. The work is characterized by its fearless use of color, strong outlines, and a contemporary Afro-pop sensibility that is both accessible and powerful.

Though wildlife is his starting point, it is not his destination. Leroy sees himself as a versatile painter, constantly experimenting with new mediums, techniques, and ideas. For him, painting is about freedom – the freedom to try, to learn, to make mistakes, and to grow.

As an artist at the start of his career, Leroy is seeking community, mentorship, and a platform to develop.
