Rufus

Rufus is a South African artist based in Cape Town. She is a self-taught painter who works primarily in oils (and sometimes ink), creating expressive works that explore themes of the human journey, courage, transformation, endurance, awakening, and the process of becoming fully alive.
Born in Durban in 1971, she has lived most of her life in Cape Town, South Africa.
As a lifelong artist, her practice is deeply inspired by the Hero’s Journey and its mysteries—often incorporating elements of story, music, and ideas into her creative process. Her paintings feature symbolic landscapes, solitary figures, atmospheric color, expressive brushwork, and shifting emotional/spiritual states, where weather, light, and terrain serve as mirrors of the soul and inner/outer quests for meaning.
She has produced numerous solo exhibitions, group shows, and a hardcover book consisting of 56 paintings accompanied by her own, personal reflections of her life, titled The Hero’s Journey.
