{"id":779,"count":1,"description":"I\u2019m Johan Steinberg, a South African charcoal artist drawn to the quiet, high-contrast moments that reveal who we really are. I\u2019m self-taught and only picked up drawing seriously a few years ago. What started as a way to unwind quickly became a deep need to explore what lies between visibility and concealment the parts we show the world and the parts we keep in shadow.\r\nI work almost entirely in black and white because charcoal doesn\u2019t let you hide. The deep blacks and stark whites force honesty. I\u2019m obsessed with the tension they create: the texture of skin, the weight behind a gaze, the way a single fragment of a face can carry a whole story. Whether I\u2019m drawing people or wildlife, I\u2019m chasing the same thing presence.\r\nNot just how someone looks, but what they feel beneath the surface.\r\nI\u2019m not classically trained. For years I worked as a technician, and that detail-driven mindset still shapes how I approach each piece. I taught myself by putting in the hours late nights, mistakes, starting over until the medium started to make sense. It\u2019s unforgiving, but that\u2019s why I trust it.\r\nNone of this would be possible without my wife, Anne-lize. Her belief in me, especially when I was just figuring things out, gave me the courage to keep going. Our three children are my daily reality check and my biggest motivation. Balancing the quiet intensity of the studio with the chaos and love of a house of five keeps me grounded. They remind me why I do this: to capture real, unspoken emotion.\r\nMy portraits are intimate fragments I leave as much obscured as I reveal. \r\nI want you to lean in, sit with the discomfort, and find something of yourself in the shadows.","link":"https:\/\/www.kunyeartfoundation.org\/?product_cat=johan-steinberg","name":"Johan Steinberg","slug":"johan-steinberg","taxonomy":"product_cat","parent":43,"meta":[],"menu_order":0,"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.kunyeartfoundation.org\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/product_cat\/779","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.kunyeartfoundation.org\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/product_cat"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.kunyeartfoundation.org\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/taxonomies\/product_cat"}],"up":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.kunyeartfoundation.org\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/product_cat\/43"}],"wp:post_type":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.kunyeartfoundation.org\/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Fproduct&product_cat=779"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
