Nomalizo engages in a direct dialogue with classical art history, reimagining the poised posture of Leonardo da Vinci’s Mona Lisa through a contemporary African lens.

In this piece, my practice balances recognizable figurative structures with a language of rhythmic abstraction to explore the profound depth of human identity and heritage.

The composition replaces a traditional Eurocentric landscape with a vibrant, textured backdrop of blue and white strokes. The subject is draped in a richly textured garment and a traditional headscarf (doek), firmly grounding her presence in a proud cultural context.
Rather than rendering realistic facial features, the face and neck are captured as a bold silhouette illuminated by fragments of gold leaf. This intentional use of gold shifts the focus from physical likeness to a celebration of inherent worth, resilience, and sacred heritage.

Nomalizo is an assertion of grace and quiet power, a testament to the timeless dignity of African portraiture.
